To achieve the highest protection from an impressed current system we need an anode with a very low consumption rate and a high current capacity. SYNCOR mixed metal oxide (MMO) anodes can reach these requirements.
SYCHEM Mixed Metal Oxide are comprised of a titanium substrate coated by a mixed metal oxide of Iridium (IrO2) and Tantalum (Ta2O5).
The MMO coating has the following advantageous properties:
- Excellent conductivity
- Resistance to acidic environments
- Chemical stability
- Relatively low consumption rates
- Suitable for use in both chlorine and oxygen evolving electrolytes
- Life expectancy of over 50 years
- Simple and easy to install.
In soil and fresh water applications, the anodes have a recommended current density of approximately 100Amp/m2, and can be operated over 600Amp/m2 in seawater environments. The anode consumption in such high discharge levels is less than 1.0 mg/amp-yr.
Tubular Anodes
The tubular shape provides a larger surface area which allows greater current output and lower resistance. The tubular shape also enables the cable connection to take place at the center of the anode.
SYNCOR anodes have been specially manufactured to secure this connection between the cable and the anode. The connection is protected from moisture by using a waterproof sealant which fills the entire anode tube. The ends of the anode are then covered with shrink tubing for a completely sealed electrical connection.

Standard Dimensions
Anode | Diameer | Length (cm) | Weight (kg) assembled | Surface (m2) |
25×500 | 25 | 500 | 0.55 | 0.039 |
25×1000 | 25 | 1000 | 1.10 | 0.079 |
32×1200 | 32 | 1200 | 1.40 | 0.121 |
Standard Anodes Current output
Environment | Max Current Density (A/m2) | Life time (Years) |
Carbonaceous Backfilled | 50A/m2 | 20 |
Calcined Petroleum backfield | 100A/m2 | 20 |
Fresh Water | 100A/m2 | 20 |
Brackish Water | 100-300A/m2 | 20 |
Mud | 100A/m2 | 20 |
Sea water | 600A/m2 | 20 |
Lifetime is relevant to current output. As example if anode operate in sea water the maximum Output is 600A/m2 with life time 20 years, but if operate with 300A/m2 then life time extend to 40years.
