THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE DESALINATION UNIT OF ALMYROS RIVER AT THE MUNICIPALITY OF MALEVIZI, CRETE

The opening ceremony of the pioneer Desalination Unit of Almyros River in Municipality of Malevizi was celebrated with great success and participation. The desalination unit was designed, assembled and installed by SYCHEM SA which will operate and handle the unit for five years providing a particular low cost of about 0,26 €/m3.

The construction of the unit was accomplished under the funding of NSRF, while its operation is funded by the resources of the Municipal Enterprise for Water Supply and Sewerage (gr. abbr. DEYAM) itself. The unit, with a nominal capacity of 2.000 m3/d, is equipped with state of the art technology, such as ultrafiltration equipment, energy recovery system and advanced electronic control securing the lowest energy consumption and high reliability.

The Desalination Unit of Almyros was inaugurated by Mr. S. Arnaoutakis – Head of the Region of Crete, Mr. K. Mamoulakis – Mayor of Malevizi City and the President and Managing Director of SYCHEM S.A. Dr.-Ing A. Yfantis, while more than 150 representatives from the Public and Private Sector honored the ceremony. The event was finally followed by a successful reception.

The underlying vision of the unit is to be established as a model for the usage of the brackish rivers and natural sources.
